INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT LAYTON OF SUITE 101
A few weeks back I was fortunate enough to get an interview from D. Squire Wells, Creator, publisher, and writer of "Scooterman", an independent comic book.

Robert: How did you get started doing your own comic book? (i.e. - is this a life-long dream, did you get in by chance, etc.)
Squire: I got into the comic book business kind of by choice or you may say chance. I had the idea for my character "Scooterman" for a long time and wanted to turn it into a Screenplay. Every Winter I said that this is when I would write my "Scooterman" screenplay and by every Spring, there would be little or no Screenplay. I finally decided that the best way to get my point and idea out there was to publish a comic book.
Robert: Is there any comic book artist or writer that inspired you from when you were getting started?
Squire: The comic book artists that inspired me most are three people. Ben Edlund from "The Tick" and Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
Robert: Do you have a favorite artist or writer today?
Squire: My favorite artist is Todd McFarlane and my favorite writer is Brian Pulido.
Robert: What type of comic is "Scooterman"? Which well know book is he most like or inspired from? (i.e. how would you describe Scooterman and what type of comic this is?) (From what I remember he's just a regular guy - nonsuperhero - more or less)
Squire: "Scooterman" is definitely an action/comedy. At least that is what we try to produce in our books. I hope that most people see that we are trying to have fun with this comic. If I try to emulate any style at all it would be the old "Batman" television show from the sixties.
Robert: Do you have any special training to learn to draw or write?
Squire: I don't draw and I'll be very honest with you, I am still learning how to write comic books. I am much better at writing humorous short stories. I think that writing comic books is very hard. There may be some people out there that beg to differ with me but I still say it is very hard. I think that until Scooterman is an established character , I am the best man for the writing. I want to make sure that he is going in the direction that I want.
Robert: Where does this comic take place?
Squire: This comic book takes place in a fictitious city located on the Inter-Coastal waterway in Florida. If I had to pick the perfect city for a Scooterman Movie it would be filmed in St.Augustine, Florida. A place I once lived.
Robert: Why publish an independent comic? Why not try to get on with one of the "big" comic companies?
Squire: I tried to get a few comic book companies to publish my idea but it just didn't happen. It was also at the beginning of the fall of the Industry. I realize now that it was the best thing that could of happened to me. What I learned from self-publishing was amazing even though the book is not a smash hit. The movie will be though, I can tell you that. Oh yeh, what movie ? Hollywood....call me !
Robert: Bob Layton speaking at MegaCon 2000 said that he would not think of trying to start a comic publisher in today's market - sales from major companies are down, retailers are playing it safe by ordering fewer of an individual issue, cost (especially paper) are rising. How can an independent publisher like yourself get by in this business market?
Squire: I would and wouldn't recommend self-publishing today. I would if you wanted to learn alot about the comic book Industry. I would to learn about what it takes to produce and print a comic book. I would to learn about rejection and sales (not saying that you wouldn't sell any books). I wouldn't if you were planning on making money. It is almost literally impossible to self-publish a hit independent comic book in the comic book Industry today. The best article I ever read on self-publishing was Wizard #46. Brian Pulido taught me more in that article then I ever learned by going out and doing what I did. I look at a guy like Brian Pulido, his wife Francisca and the crew at Chaos Comics and what they accomplished, it's incredible ! I have alot of respect for that guy. He came in to the Industry as a self publisher and completely kicked ass!
Robert: What are you working on right now?
Squire: Right now we are working on our #4 comic book. A Scooterman/Key West issue. Now this is weird. Although I know that the comic book will most likely lose money, I still want to produce it...why ? Because since I started self-publishing comics I found out one thing...I love it ! I love producingcomic books that portray my story and characters. You just can't do something like this anywhere. Maybe on the Internet but it just isn't the same thing.
Robert: What do you most want to tell folks about Scooterman?
Squire: Scooterman is real ! In my eyes he is real. I think that you somehow become so obsessed with the characters that you create that they become real people to you. Since my characters are actual human beings, I think I may have more of an affinity to them then others. I may be wrong. You would have to ask other creators. I know that at times that is all I ever thought about. Scooterman, Scooterman, Scooterman. I now sound like Jan Brady.
Robert: What do you most want to tell folks about yourself?
Squire: I can tell you one thing about myself is that I am alot like my character Scooterman.
Robert: Why will Scooterman be a success?
Squire: Scooterman will be a success if Hollywood ever decides to call me. Here are the (four) reasons.
1) Scooterman is a real guy. Anyone can be Scooterman. Kids can be anyone, except Superman, Spiderman, Wolverine, Captain America etc. You clearly wouldn't say to your child. "Hey Junior, jump off the roof, remember, your Superman !" You may however say. "Hey Junior ! Hop on this mini-scooter, put these cool sunglasses on and ride around the back yard...you're Scooterman ! It comes to a point where even kids get smarter. They know they can't fly or leap tall buildings with web-feet. Pretty soon there will be new market for more realistic characters. Hollywood needs some new blood !
2) Scooters are everywhere in this world, the main method of transportation in some countries (India, Italy etc.) making them a very universal vehicle. Scooterman is therefore universal. Even more so due to the fact that he fights crime with International characters that are from alot of different countries.
3) Scooterman is a positive role model. He rarely uses weapons and has awesome table manners.
4) I can sit here and honestly tell you that in terms of self-published comic books in the last six years, almost none have been geared towards Kids. I wrote Friends of Lulu years ago and donated money to them. Hoping for a review of my book Scooterman. Two years later they print that to save the Industry,"we must think towards the younger crowd" Hello ! What about Scooterman ?"...O.K. I am through!

Μερικές φορές οι φίλοι μας από όλο πέρα από τον κόσμο έρχονται κοντά να πουν γεια και να μας βοηθήσουν επίσης.Το δίκυκλο-άτομο επιθυμεί να συναγωνιστεί τα μηχανικά δίκυκλα και τις μοτοσικλέτες με δύο καλούς φίλους του «Gordon από τη Μεγάλη Βρετανία» και «το Anthony από την Ιταλία». Έχουμε επίσης πολλούς άλλους φίλους που έρχονται και επισκέπτονται επίσης.Η γάτα μου Simon δεν μιλά αλλά βέβαιος μας βοηθά να διασώσουμε τους ανθρώπους όταν τον χρειαζόμαστε. Einige Leute kennen ihn um Stadt als „Roller-Mann“.Wir arbeiten an der Brant-Felsen-Garage zusammen und helfen den Leuten um Stadt mit ihren täglichen Notwendigkeiten. Manchmal unsere Freunde von auf der ganzen Erde vorbei gekommen, um zu sagen hallo und uns auch heraus zu helfen.Roller-Mann mag Roller und Motorräder mit seinen zwei guten Freunden „Gordon laufen von Großbritannien“ und „von Anthony aus Italien“. Wir haben auch viele anderen Freunde, die auch kommen und besuchen.Meine Katze Simon spricht nicht, aber er sure hilft uns, Leute zu retten, wenn wir ihn benötigen. Certains le connaissent autour de la ville en tant que « Scooter-homme ».Nous travaillons ensemble au garage de roche de Brant et aidons les personnes autour de la ville avec leurs besoins journaliers. Parfois nos amis de partout dans le monde venus près pour dire salut et pour nous dépanner également.le Scooter-homme aime emballer des scooters et des motos avec ses deux bons amis « Gordon de Grande-Bretagne » et « Anthony d'Italie ». Nous avons également beaucoup d'autres amis qui viennent et visitent aussi.Mon chat Simon ne parle pas mais il sure nous aide à sauver des personnes quand nous avons besoin de lui.
